Our Pioneer Members
In the year 1854, Sisters of St. Joseph arrived inNagpur, from
Chambéry, France, journeying 92 days by bullock cart from Vizagapatam (AP) to educate
illiterate women, take charge of orphan children, abandoned and deserted, by parents and
guardians. On the long and tedious journey, some of these Sisters of St.
Joseph of
Chambéry,died on the way due to intense heat and
inclemencies of weather, lack of
proper drinking water, protection and safety.These courageous sisters were called to take
care of the sick, the poor, the uneducated, marginalized.
Ever since then, Sisters of St. Joseph have been serving in Nagpur, Maharashtra State.
Gradually these members spread to other States of the Country with the same objective
of service, but with the specific objective of empowering women and children in both
urban and ruralareas.Currently our personnel are engaged in various activities including
Education, Health, Social and Legal, Mentally challenged children, physically handicapped,
Hearing Impaired (both Residential and Day centres), formal and non normal education,
Geriatric Care of the old and aged of Society.
